Changing VW ATF Tech Info

As an independent VW service garage with over 25 years of hands-on experience, we know what fails on VWs and why. We feel that changing your fluids is one of the most important preventive maintenance routines. Yet, for many VW owners, this seems to be one of the most neglected area of maintenance. Thoroughly flushing your fluids at the proper intervals can help your VW reach 150,000 miles and beyond!

Flushing and Changing VW Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) Is Important!

Some VW authorities suggest that you don't need to change your VW's automatic transmission fluid. We simply feel this is illogical. A VW automatic transmission has hundreds of moving components, such as needle bearings, pressure pumps, clutch packs, servo pistons and seals. These internal components mesh with one another, begin to wear, and create fine metallic particles which contaminate the VW automatic transmission fluid. Over time, the VW automatic transmission fluid (ATF) and paper filament transmission filter become contaminated with these particles. New transmission fluid is nearly clear in color. If you've ever seen the dark color of old transmission fluid, you'll agree that it seems very logical that changing the VW automatic transmission fluid and filter are needed.

Pictured Example
Transmission service performed in our repair shop on an Audi A6 12 valve model. The Audi A6 had a tiptronic automatic transmission with approximately 80,000 miles on it. The customer complained of shifting problems when the transmission was cold. Note the dirty metallic sediment that was removed from the transmission drain pan. After changing the automatic transmission fluid using one of our BLAU® Automatic Transmission Fluid Filter Change Kits, the customer reported that his transmission shifting problems were gone. If you're experiencing Audi or VW transmission shifting problem, Blauparts recommends changing your automatic transmission fluid and filter as a first step in solving the problem.

VW ATF Change Intervals

VW automatic transmission fluid levels should be checked at regular intervals. Changing your VW automatic transmission fluid helps extend the life of your transmission by properly lubricating the main shaft bearings and synchros. VW automatic transmission fluid should be changed every 30,000 miles - 60,000 miles. The intervals depend on your operating conditions. The VW automatic transmission fluid and filter should be serviced every 30,000 miles when driving in heavy city traffic, hot weather, trailer pulling, and other severe driving conditions. The 60,000 miles change interval applies to those who mainly put on highway miles. With the exeption of the DSG transmission, which the factory manual recommends be changed every 30,000 - 40,000 miles.

VW automatic transmission fluid levels should be checked at regular intervals. Most 1992-on VW models don't have a transmission fluid dipstick for checking the VW transmission fluid level. To fill and check the level of the VW automatic transmission fluid you have to remove a plug on the side or bottom (location depends on model) of the transmission drain pan.

How To Change VW Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) - Basic Overview

  • Flushing your VW automatic transmission fluid should always be done in conjunction with the automatic filter replacement.
  • Refer to the factory Robert Bentley VW manual for detailed VW automatic transmission fluid system instructions.
  • We recommend having an A.S.E. Audi VW certified mechanic change your VW automatic transmission fluid.
  • Always wear gloves and safety goggles when handling VW fluids.

Basic Overview On How To Change VW Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF):

This basic overview is illustrated using an VW Mark IV with a 4 speed transverse mounted transmission..

The steps are also applicable to VW models with 4 Speed Inline and Transverse and 5 Speed Inline Mounted Transmissions.

  • How To Step 1

Make sure the vehicle is perfectly level.
When the transmission fluid is still warm, but the vehicle has cooled down, remove the VW transmission drain plug and drain the fluid into an appropriate container. Remove the automatic transmission fluid oil pan.
  • How To Step 2

Clean the sediment out of the bottom of the transmission fluid oil pan. Clean the magnets which have attracted metallic particles.

  • How To Step 3

Remove the VW automatic transmission fluid filter.

  • How To Step 4

Install the new VW transmission filter rubber pan gasket, and filter onto the transmission valve body (shown). Torque the screws to factory specifications.

Align the new VW automatic transmission fluid oil pan gasket with the oil pan and install the oil pan. Torque the screws to factory specifications. (not shown)
  • How To Step 5

Remove the VW automatic transmission fluid oil pan fill plug (Image 5).

  • How To Step 6

Using the high output pump (replaces VW special tool VAG 1924) supplied with our VW transmission filter kit, fill the oil pan with the VW automatic transmission fluid until it runs out.

  • How To Step 7

Reinstall the VW automatic transmission fluid oil fill plug hand tight.
  • How To Step 8

Start the car. With your foot pressed down on the brake pedal, shift the transmission selector in each gear for about 10 seconds. Note: Don't drive the car.
  • How To Step 9

Remove the oil fill plug while the car is at an idle and add more VW automatic transmission fluid until it runs out. The final steps and procedures for topping off the VW automatic transmission fluid level will vary depending on VW model and year. It is critical to obtain the proper VW automatic transmission fluid level to prevent VW transmission shifting problems especially with tiptronic transmissions. You should refer to the factory manual or Blauparts® VW automatic transmission fluid change instructions that are now included in most of our BLAU® VW Automatic Transmission Fluid Filter Change Kits!

FAQ: What Type of Transmission Fluid Does Your VW Use?

To find out what type of ATF your VW model uses, try our >> Search By Model Tool

Your VIN (vehicle identification number) is the one sure way to find out what type of transmission your model has. Some customers have contacted their dealer with their VIN and requested ATF information. Only an authorized Audi VW dealer can access the bill of material info, which reveals what transmission was used in your car, the transmission code, and the subsequent fluid. Blauparts is an independent Audi VW parts specialist and does not have access to this bill of material info. We therefore CANNOT tell you what type your vehicle has.

Also, customers can check their VW factory service manual for what ATF is recommended for use in their vehicle.

  • What is the difference between an VW Inline Mounted and an VW Transverse Mounted Transmission?

VW models came with many different transmissions. These terms (inline and transverse) can refer to either the engine or the transmission.

Most earlier VW models came equipped with an inline mounted automatic transmission. An inline transmission is positioned in the engine compartment forward to aft (front to rear) in the body of the car. Some newer VW models came equipped with transverse mounted automatic transmissions. Transverse mounted transmissions are positioned sideways (left to right) in the body of the car.

  • VW Tiptronic Transmission

Around 1998 many VWs came equipped with a tiptronic transmission. Tiptronic is the term VW uses to describe their manumatic type transmission. Automatic tiptronic transmissions allows the driver to switch over and manually control gear selection.

  • DSG VW Transmission

A few VW models came equipt with the direct shift gearbox (DSG) transmissions. These transmissions feature both manual and automatic modes of operation. The design yeilds better RPM control for more powerful and smoother shifting.

Hello, I’m looking at you kits for a transmission fluid change. I have a 2002 vw jetta with a 5 speed tiptronic. I see you have that listed, and I assume that it is the proper kit, but I see you don’t have it listed for the 2.8 L v6. My transmission code is EEF Am I correct in assuming that you have the correct kit?
Answer from Huri of the blauparts technical team:
We were missing the Vw Jetta VR6 models with 5 speed tiptronic transmissions from our transmission filter kit listings. Go can now go to our parts department and search by model and you will find the kit available. Thanks for bring this to our attention!

Hi I want to change my transmission fluid. 2010 vw cc dsg automatic. Can I do it without software? Or do I have to measure the temp and all that after I change the oil
Answer from Huri of the blauparts technical team:
To do it correctly you should follow factory procedures and use the software to get an accurate temperature reading of the transmission fluid to obtain the proper fluid level during refill. Some individuals have taken short cuts and drained their fluid in a drain pain with volume measurements and then refill that exact amount. Others have used an inferred temperature gun to measure the temperature of the transmission so they can get an approximate temperature measurement needed for topping off the fluid.

    Question/Comment from:
    Sid D
With regard to a VW touran 1T1TC3 1.6 with tiptronic gearbox GXY code. I don’t think the transmission fluid or filter have been change in its lifetime, sometimes the gears slip and occasionally stop working until left to cool down, then all’s well again for a period of time. What filter and fluid is required and how is the level achieved. Is there anything else that can be changed in the sump area to help the box to work better, other than a new gearbox. Thanks in advance for your assistance.
Answer from Huri of the blauparts technical team:
Sorry we do not have the touran in the U.S. yet so we cannot answer your question completely. However, from your explanation about the gears sometime slip occasionally, you would want to for sure replace the transmission filter and fluid as a first step. There is a possibility that the trans filter is dirty and as a result causing some restriction of fluid coming from the sump pan and in turn the low fluid supply to the trans pump could be causing the slipping.

    Question/Comment from:
    Mark C
2001 Jetta VR6 GLS Automatic: The dealer said the transmission fluid is in a pack and never needs to be changed for the life of the transmission. The internet has several videos on how to change the transmission fluid. Which is it, the fluid needs to be changed or it doesn’t?
Answer from Huri of the blauparts technical team:
This is a common question. Everyone has a opinion on whether to change the fluid or not. Our opinion is Change It! Our hands on experience and engineering logic say that any automotive component that has internal moving parts (gears, bearings, clutches etc.) that engage or mesh with one another that are lubricated by fluid required changing. The fluid will breakdown and get contaminated by the engagement or meshing of gears and bearings over time. We’ve performed numerous ATF filter fluid changes on Vw’s and the fluid and filter are consistently dirty if the vehicle had over 60K miles.

Answer from Huri of the blauparts technical team:
Replace both the transmission filter and ATF fluid according to factory manual. If your transmission still is slipping you will have to replace the transmission with a used, remanufactured one or have it rebuilt by a professional. Sorry we do not have a ATF filter kit for your car

I have a VW Golf 4 1999. I changed the clutch-plates, transmission fluid, and the filter, now the problem is that my gearbox is not reading on the dash. Its always in drive, even if i change its reading as its in drive but but there is no power coming. Please help
Answer from Huri of the blauparts technical team:
It appears you may have multiple issues with the transmission. If the transmission was disassembled it may not have been reassembled correctly. Also check the electrical connector from the main engine wiring harness to the transmission and make sure it is plugged in.

hiya i have a 2003 auto trip tronic vw sharan which has done 85000 miles just been bought some one told me to change the oil and oil filter on the gearbox,so i went to the dealers to buy the oil and filter and they were just standing there laughing saying there’s no need to change any of the above am a bit confused if that really is the case.
Answer from Huri of the blauparts technical team:
If you decide to change your filter and fluid and if you know it’s never been changed before we are confident it will be just as dirty as what is shown in the picture on our web page here > http://www.blauparts.com/vw_oils/vw_atf_fluid/vw_automatic_transmission_fluid_change.html All fluids in an automobile that are used to lubricate a specific component will get dirty. It is only logical to conclude they should be changed to prevent wear. Changing fluids and filters increases the life of the automotive component.(i.e. transmission) .

Performing trans service on ’05 Passat 1.8T FWD Tip next weekend with your kit. Is supplied amount of ATF enough, or is an extra quart recommended? Thanks.
Answer from Huri of the blauparts technical team:
Sorry for the late reply. Typically on Vw Passat models the kit should have enough for the filter fluid change. Situations that can cause you to need an extra quart of fluid are. 1) The vehicle not being on a level surface at the time you are performing the filter fluid change. 2) Changing the transmission fluid when the fluid temp is above 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees C).

My daughter has a 2005 VW Jetta 2.5L with a trans code of HRM. Can you tell me what kind of transmission that is and what type of fluid it takes ? Thank you for your time and you have a fantastic website !
Answer from Huri of the blauparts technical team:
Don, Thank you so much for the complement! That is such a great car! The 2005 was a overlap year have both Mark IV and Mark V platforms. Jetta’s with the 2.5L 5 Cylinder were the Mark V platform. The transmission in the 2.5L is a 6 speed tiptronic (09G series ). The transmission filter kit is here: http://www.blauparts.com/proddetail.asp?prod=F2A1014-B If you just need the fluid here it is : http://www.blauparts.com/proddetail.asp?prod=J1D2108-B

My question is do or will any of theses transmission fluids work in 03’ VW Jetta with 09A EYP Tiptronpic transmission
Answer from Huri of the blauparts technical team:
We are assuming your 2003 Vw Jetta 09A Tiptronic has the the 4 Cylinder 1.8L Turbo engine. If it does, You must use a specific transmission fluid for the tiptronic transverse mounted trans in 2001-05 Jetta’s with the 1.8T. The Fluid is Ravenol JF506E (Made in Germany) Specifically for this trans.

If you interested in the kit with the correct fluid here it is: F2A1013-C

If you need just the correct fluid here it is: J1D2109
